Rebecca Potter

Journalist and avid InDesigner

About

Thank you for checking out my website! My name is Rebecca Potter and I am a 33-year-old journalist, designer, editor and proofreader living in London, Ont.

While I grew up in in Burlington, Ont., I moved to Ottawa in 2010 to attend the journalism program at Algonquin College. During the summer break, I worked at the Haliburton Echo, a community newspaper in Ontario cottage country. When I returned to college, I was named the Layout Editor for the campus newspaper, the Algonquin Times. Shortly before graduation, I took my six-week placement at the Eganville Leader, a community newspaper in a town just outside Renfrew, Ont. I graduated with my diploma in journalism in 2012.

I freelanced for the Ottawa Citizen, including a 1,600-word feature on bass music, and attended Ottawa Bluesfest and a festival in Barry’s Bay, Ont., for a local music website.

I began working for TV Media in 2012, a TV listings and pagination company, where I worked as a paginator and content writer.

In 2013, I was named the Production Manager for the University of Ottawa’s English-language student newspaper, The Fulcrum. For the 2013-14 school year, I worked with a staff of editors and volunteers to put together 27 weekly issues from August to April, and single-handedly created the newspaper with Adobe products such as InDesign and Photoshop.

In 2014, I moved to Toronto to become an editor for Pagemasters North America, the Canadian Press commercial division that provides editorial production services. I designed newspaper pages and edited stories for The Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star. I proofread content from the Globe’s Report on Business and the Star’s world news pages, building and paginating pages as described by editorial management, and specialized in running the Sports section for both publications. This included training newer editors on how to manage the section and meeting tight print deadlines on a regular basis. I worked quickly to turn around print and web copy for major world events, such as Canadian and U.S. elections and the Olympics.

In 2018, I moved back to Burlington to work on the Toronto Star out of the Hamilton Spectator building. I used a custom operating system to edit and proofread stories and design pages for the Toronto Star. During my time with the company, I specialized in news, entertainment, business and sports content, working in constant communication with section editors and sending the final pages to the printer. I reviewed and proofread last-minute stories before deadline, while crafting and checking display copy under pressure. I worked as a team leader on multiple occasions, managing fellow editors and acting as the liaison between our team and editorial management at the Star.

In 2021, I began working as a quality assurance editor for a medical education company called P/S/L Group. Working remotely, I collaborated with medical and production team members to produce and review materials for various healthcare professionals in a broad range of therapeutic areas. I evaluated websites, HTMLs, emails, print and promotional materials for inconsistencies, discrepancies and inaccuracies, guarantee functionality and ensure business standards and deadlines are met. I also had the opportunity to work on expedited client requests, train interns on QA processes, and create and maintain internal process documents.

In 2024, I had the opportunity to work alongside a team of pedagogical and musical experts to create and distribute Smart Start, the Royal Conservatory of Music‘s signature, research-based early childhood music education program. I collaborated with the digital team to ensure lesson plans and activities were accurate, up-to-date and easy for teachers to understand. As employees were scattered over North America, we used Microsoft Teams, Airtable and weekly video calls to stay connected and informed.

In 2025, I began working for a company called BlogWorks, which delivers SEO-rich blog articles to clients from all over the world. As the Content Editor and Coordinator, I work with a team of international writers to schedule and deliver articles on a number of different topics.
