The local curling club held their end of season bonspiel Saturday to have a little fun and raise money for the club.

Dozens came out in support of the club with 16 teams registered, helping to keep the club alive. The bonspiel started on Friday evening and finished Saturday night.

“We’re calling it a desperation bonspiel,” said club president Charlie Penny. “The club is a bit shaky because we don’t have enough members.”

Speculation of closing the facility is there, but Mr. Penny doesn’t think the lack of members will be even to shut them down.

“I don’t think that will happen, but it’s an outside possibility,” he said.

Fun was the word of the day, with each team playing multiple games and players participating in some fundraising, such as 50/50 draws and the draw for closest to the button. Joan Lindsay was the winner of the contest, as she drew within less than three inches of the button.

“We’re trying some fundraising here, a 50/50 draw, and the draw to the button is a 50/50 draw. Everyone pays $2 and the winner gets half the pot,” Mr. Penny said. “There are also door prizes, and a prize for high team and low team.”

Curling Club members and non-members alike joined the festivities, ranging in age from about 14 to 80.

“Half of the people playing are here only for the bonspiel, and we hope to entice some of them into becoming members next year,” Mr. Penny said. “I don’t know whether that will happen, but we’ll try.”

When all was said and done, the club had a great end of season event, there were smiles on everyone’s faces and Mr. Penny hopes that these fun festivities will keep the club alive.
