Living ‘Big Time’ – March 24, 2011

Fans lined the cold and wet sidewalks at the Bronson Centre on March 10 for a special performance from 2AM Club, Sweet Thing, and Down With Webster. Ottawa was the 10th stop on the WinTour for the bands, who were in Kingston the night before.

When Down With Webster jumped onto the stage, every person in the building screamed. The band was awash with the flashes from digital cameras and cell phones, while other fans made a big W with their hands shouting ‘D-Dub’, the band’s nickname. The band had amazing energy, and the whole crowd was on their feet, bouncing with the music.

“Two and a half hours with frozen toes [was] so worth it,” said Maeghan Waters, a long-time Down With Webster fan and an attendee of the concert. “One word – amazing!”

The band opened up with their pump-up song “Go Time”, and shortly after, tossed their signature red beer cups out into the crowd. Between classics like “Your Man”, and hits from their first album Time To Win, Vol. I, to songs that will appear on their next album, the fans were feeding off the bands energy the whole time. There was no rest for the band – they never stopped moving and dancing, just like the crowd. Even the drummer ‘Marty’ Martino had a huge drum solo, which the crowd adored.

Just before the show began, there was a meet and greet with Down With Webster and a few lucky fans, who had the chance to get CDs signed and pictures taken. The band was very down to earth, and even with their busy schedule, they enjoyed getting to know their fans, appreciating the people who brought them fame.

Opening act Sweet Thing, a Toronto based band, walked onto the stage to a roar of applause from fans. Lead singer Owen Carrier, an Algonquin theatre arts alumnus, seemed very pleased with the tour so far.

“It’s fun to get their perspective and their experiences, and how they got to where they’re at now,” Carrier said.

Sweet Thing seemed to be quite a hit in Ottawa – when the band sang popular songs like Lazy Susan, Dance Mother and Spiders, the crowd sang along with them.

The first band to perform was 2AM Club, who took over for ‘New Politics’ for the eastern part of the tour. Originally from California, this six-piece band wowed the crowd with up-beat, danceable music. Singer Marc Griffin shook the room with great vocals, and the excited crowd cheered loudly for the band.

At the end of the night, fans walked away from the Bronson Centre pleased. Another Down With Webster fan named Beatrice Pradal was very satisfied by the end of the show.

“It was epic! I had lots of fun and it looked like d dub had fun too,” she said. “It was definitely a win.”
